Whenever we think of a swimming pool, the quickest view that hits the mind’s eye is the crystal clear water meeting with sunshine. How does this shine come? Pool care is an enjoyable activity if you know it well. Pool water clarity and quality run side by side if you are good at keeping pool maintenance.   The basic purpose of adding Chlorine in the swimming pool water is to get rid of all germs. No one would like to swim in water that is not free of germs or mixed with harmful substances that get into pool water with human bodies.

Chlorine in the swimming pool water: the linkage:

Chlorine is the most common chemical that is used to keep the swimming pool free from harmful microorganisms. Not the near-pool environment is only responsible for the presence of such organisms, but the first source is human activity in the pool. The sweat, urine, and other discharges make pool water unhealthy. This contaminated water cause’s disease like intense irritation on the skin, athlete’s foot, diarrhea, and the list goes on as the body can react in different ways on exposure to germs.

The way that is familiar to us to get rid of these germs is the addition of chlorine to the water. But it is better to know all about this pool treatment as doing trials and errors will destroy your health, time, and money.

What quantity of chlorine is required in the pool?

The idea level of chlorine in a swimming pool is between 1 and 1.5 ppm. To know the exact amount of chlorine for a pool, you need to know the size of the pool, and the volume of water in it.

Whatever volume of water you have in your pool, convert it into gallons. The pool test kit will show the amount of chlorine in it and your task is to bring it at 1 ppm. The amount of chlorine required per gallon is 0.00013. Multiply this factor by the number of a gallon of water in the pool; you will get the desired ppm of chlorine to purify the water.

How to chlorinate the pool?

Swimming pools can be disinfected using chlorine-based products. These compounds include a gaseous form of chlorine, liquid bleach (sodium hypochlorite), lithium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite, and chlorinated isocyanurates. These compounds produce hypochlorous acid, which disinfects the water.

Is it safe to swim in a pool with a chlorine smell?

Sometimes, there is a chlorine-like odor in the pool. This doesn’t show an excess of chlorine in the pool, but it comes as an indicator that “chloramine” is present there in the pool. When chlorine is added to sanitize the pool, the contaminations like oil released from the body and urine combine with chlorine and form chloramine. A shock treatment or super chlorination can remove chloramine from water.

Shock treatment:

Shock treatment is an act of adding a big volume of the oxidizing chemical into the swimming pool. This treatment is needed when there is a strong chlorine odor in the pool which indicates the presence of contaminations. For this intense situation, chlorine shock products are available to completely disinfect the water. These oxidizing chemicals destroy the contaminations and also provide some additional benefits like eliminating algae and bacteria. This “shock” is given by the pump and filter. When an amount of 5+ ppm of free available chlorine is added to the pool, this treatment is referred to as super-chlorination.

The effect of chlorine on the human body:

Chlorine is an essential part of pool life, and without chlorination, no one would like to swim in the pool. But not everyone knows the “side-effects” of excess chlorine without experiencing them. Usually, we think that it will cause irritation in the eyes, or will produce some kind of reaction in skin cells. But there can be more injurious effects as it is a poisonous gas in its nature. . The superfluous chlorine is a cause of asthma, which is not common, but if someone swims in a fresh chlorinated pool, the risk goes high. Old age swimmers can be a victim. To avoid this danger, the pool should be immediately closed for swimmers after chlorination.

For skin, it can irritate, but one should follow some simple rules. Take shower immediately after swimming. As a precaution, use some moisturizer on the skin, because chlorine takes away some essential natural oils of the body. You can retain these oils by applying the moisturizer. You may need to apply moisturizer regularly if you spend more time in the pool.

If you suffer from an eye irritation after swimming in an over-chlorinated pool, immediately wash them up, but be careful, the eye is the most sensitive part of your body. Try to avoid swimming in such a pool environment which can cause eye burning.

What causes the loss of chlorine loss in pool water?

A pool owner and specifically public swimming pool owners should know the pool chemistry well. The first thing in pool maintenance is the preservation of chlorine levels. Many factors cause chlorine loss, but one can easily prevent this from happening if causes are eliminated as the priority.

Contaminations:

If there are more contaminations like body oils, urine and sweat then chlorine eliminates them and falls in fighting against them. If chlorine drops too faster, then check the infections in the water and apply the appropriate water treatment.

Droppings from the air:

Noticeable dirt comes in water through the droppings of birds. If your pool is covered with trees, then there will be a continuous addition of dirt through birds. This will cause an early dropping in the chlorine level.

Hot weather:

Chlorine runs down due to extremely hot weather.

The reason has a biological base as bacteria grow at a rapid rate in heat. Sunlight heats water and a huge fraction of chlorine defends against them. As result, almost all chlorine is lost, and there is an urgent requirement to put more chlorine and stabilizing agents.

The UV rays:

Not only the sunlight multiplies bacteria in water, but also the UV rays from the sun cause chlorine loss. When the ultraviolet rays from sunlight hit the pool water, chlorine escapes from water in gaseous form. To maintain the level of chlorine on full sunny days, add the chlorine daily.

Rainwater:

Rainwater affects the pH of water, and pH affects the chlorine level. In rainy seasons, test the pH of the water using pool test kits and add Chlorine in the swimming pool water as needed.
